ABOUT ME 

Gigi Chi Ying LAM is a musician-educator whose professional portfolio includes performance, composition, teaching, organizational development, event management and research. She has performed across London, Rotterdam and Hong Kong as a theatre musician and song-writer. She is the co-founder of Little Bean Theatre, a family Cantonese theatre based in London. She was an arts administrator and primary school music teacher before she started her doctoral study at Royal College of Music, London supervised by Dr. Jennie Henley and Dr. Dave Camlin. She is a Charles Richard Sisson Scholar. Her studies is supported by the Great Britain-China Educational Trust, Dr Maggie Koong & Mr Terry Ng Scholarship for Academic Excellence, Goodenough Doctoral Scholarship and Cecilia Kwok Music Scholarship. Her primary research interest is around developing an understanding of community music practice in school music education, and the transferability of the practice to other professional domains, especially in NCS (non-Chinese speaking) language learning context.

Music Education 

She graduated with a Master of Arts in Music Education and Bachelor of Education (Honours) from the Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK). During her time at EdUHK, she was awarded the Hong Kong Jockey Club, AIA foundation and EdUHK entrance scholarships, and she was the recipient of Integrative Arts Award (2007), Outstanding Contribution Award (2011)and Outstanding Academic Excellence award (2010-2011). She has worked as a full time music teacher in PLK Choi Kai Yau School (2014-2016) and music tutor of Hong Kong Down's Syndrome Association and Jockey Club Artspiration Academy which promote equal accessibility in artistic activities. In 2018-2019, she worked as a part time lecturer at Hong Kong Baptist University where she delievers music education and pedagogies undergraduate courses. She is now currently working as a graduate teaching assistant at the Royal College of Music, London, responsible for undergraduate aural and musicianship classes. 

Community Arts Practice 

As project officer at EdUHK, she has organised the ARTIVIVA Festival of Community Arts , providing opportunities for the public to engage with professional artists and arts students to experience how visual and performing arts can come alive in their lives. Alongside ARTIVIVA festival , she implemented the Music Skills Enhancement Scheme (MUSES) which includes an indoor and outdoor concert series. Delivering outreach music workshops in local schools is another focus of the scheme which aim to empower student music learning through active participation.

 

She has also worked with Haw Par Music Foundation in facilitating the summer music education project. Haw Par Music Foundation is a heritage revitalising project and hope to enriched music and arts related programs for the people of Hong Kong. In 2017, she has been selected as first community musician participating in the Po Leung Kuk V54 artist-in-residence programme . She has organised various community music workshops and projects for local practitioners. She has also been involved in community music projects with Po Leung Kuk Language Training Program, Katherine Low Settlement and Good Vibrations in UK.

 

She is also the co-founder and music director of Little Bean Theatre. Little Bean is the first and only Cantonese speaking children’s theatre company in the U.K. She has recently co-hosted trainers' workshop at Chinese Arts Now Festival at Little Angel Theatre in London, focusing on a child-led approach to improvisation and imaginary play combined with music to create theatre that encourages creativity in children and their families. 

Piano Accompaniment and Organist 

Gigi studied organ under the guidance of Mr. David Paul Werner and piano with Ms. Joyce Liu. She has also obtained a ATCL in Piano , a LTCL in organ and AMusTCL certificates. She has accompanied instrumentalists, singers , ensembles and choirs.

She has provided piano accompaniment for many graded examinations in music competitions and performances. She was working as the choir piano accompanist of Student Union Choir of City University of Hong Kong (2014-2016) and Staff choir of Royal College of Music, London (2016-2017). She is currently accompanying for Chamber Choir of Tri-borough Music Hub, The Hornsby House Singers and the Staff Choir of Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea Council. Since 2017, she serves in All Saints Church, Ealing as music director and organist. Previously she was serving as organist in Church of All Nations, Emmanuel Church Béthanie Chapel and Hong Kong and St. Martin's Church, Gospel Oak. 

She has accompanied different musical productions, theatre play and performances. Recent credits includes "Oliver" (2016,The Hall School, Wimbledon), Women in Red (2017, International Community Arts Festival, Rotterdam) and as music director in Pantomime "Alibaba and his forty thieves"  (2017, John Keble Church , London). 

Freelance Writer & Researcher

Gigi worked as a freelance proof-reader for ABRSM. She was the columnist of English Street, The Hong Kong Economics Times in promoting theatre and cultural news. She was working as the pubclitiy officer of West London Sinfonia in managing the media coverage. She regularly contributes wide range of music-related magazines and journals. 

 

She has presented her works on different perspective on community music practice during the International Drama, Theatre and Education Association (IDEA) 2013 in Paris and the International Society for MusicEducation (ISME) 2012 in Greece. She held a demonstration workshop on drama exercises in community choirs at ISME conference in Glasgow in 2016. She has also presented her active music making project at the 2017 Collisions Festival in Royal Central School of Speech and Drama.

She is currently working as the community music facilitator of Haw Par Music, the outreach manager of Yao Yueh Chinese Music Association and Collaborative Teaching Artist of Body Playground , Hong Kong. She is also the member of The Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education, Hong Kong Composers’ Guild and Composers and Authors Society of Hong Kong Limited . 

林芝瑛為活躍於倫敦與香港的社區音樂工作者,畢業於香港教育大學,完成音樂教育文學碩士及中學(音樂)教育榮譽學士課程,在學期間獲頒香港賽馬會獎學金,友邦慈善信託基金。林氏獲孔美琪博士及吳士元先生卓越學術獎學金(博士課程),郭鄭蘊檀聖樂獎學金及Richard Charles Sisson Award於英國皇家音樂學院(Royal College of Music , London)修讀哲學博士課程,主力研究社區音樂與香港音樂教育的發展。

 

林氏曾為香港經濟日報英語街文化專欄作家,並與多個本地及海外團體合作,籌辦各個音樂會,劇場製作及社區藝術活動。林氏於香港教育學院擔任項目經理期間,亦籌辦一系列外展社區藝術活動,繆思音樂會系列及ARTiViva社區綜藝節。協助策劃與聯繫社區各界人士和藝術家以互動形式把不同的藝術與生活串連。

 

林氏於2017年獲選為保良局V54駐留年青藝術家 ,舉辦不同音樂工作坊,向本地年青人推廣藝術文化的價值。林氏更擔任身體遊樂場及美育共和國合作導師及樂樂國樂團義務藝術教育經理,負責設計音樂會主題及籌辦互動音樂教育工作坊,致力推廣音樂的不同可能性。

林氏亦為香港資優教育學苑成員,香港作曲家聯會(Hong Kong Composers ‘Guild)會員及香港作曲家及作詞家協會(CASH)會員。
